Isn't that the truth I am not going to revisit that anymore. I am doing chores at night and sleeping during the hot part of the day so I guess you could say I am working the night shift. If I had a canoe, or knew how to -you can bet I would be there and treat you to a day out for r and r. I know you really could use one. I hope the appetite is better for you and sleep too, I know how that goes. I will call you later today.

I don't remember the year I took these pictures. It was before I had a digital camera, and I was using 35mm slide film. My guess is 2003, so that's what I put on the images. I do remember it was late winter, like March, and the trees had these little buds. We had an ice storm the day before, followed by snow. The next morning everything was covered in a layer of ice. It was dazzling, and beautiful. I remember feeling almost euphoric walking through the woods that morning.

Crystal balls. Early spring buds, fell from the trees, heavy with their ice encasements.

Savannah

Savannah used to cover most of the countryside here at one time. Tall prairie grasses with oak trees. Now there are just small remnants like this scattered here and there. I can only imagine how beautiful it must have been to see miles and miles of this stretched out before you. Although now that I look at this tree a little close, it almost looks like a maple. But usually maples don't hold their leaves that long. Oak trees do.

While at a friends house yesterday, we put together a 'studio' in a hurry and took school pictures of 5 children. This young lady being the 2nd of the five.

Gunflint Trail

This trail is just off the Gunflint Trail. We were on our way to a "moose viewing" platform. But we didn't see any moose there. This picture was taken around 1996. I had the privilege to return to this same place in the fall of 2007. I was relieved to see the trees here were spared from the blow down and subsequent fires. I plan to make it back there next year :).

Rice Lake State Park

This is a spring picture! I am disappointed I didn't get more harvest and ag pictures to share. So I just thought I would throw this in for the time being. But Rice Lake State Park is a little gem. A combination of prairie, and forest. Abundant wildlife, especially migratory waterfowl. And in the spring there is an amazing show of wildflowers spread on the forest floor.

Shattuck St. Marys School

This private prep school is located in Faribault, where I grew up. I did go to a private school, but not this one! It is also known as the Bishop Whipple Schools. Founded in the 1800's by Bishop Whipple. I don't have the details at hand right now, but here is a link http://www.s-sm.org/. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Whipple (Lydia Whipple). My dad told me Bishop Whipple was her great great uncle...or maybe more greats in there. I don't remember exactly. I wish I would have listened and retained more information about our family history that was passed to me by word of mouth. My fathers mother passed away a long time before I came along, and Lydia Whipple actually seems to be shrouded in mystery. I may share that story later about her.

Now this place is actually not in Minnesota. But still one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken. It was taken right around this time of year, in a county park just east of Denison Iowa. Denison is the hometown of Donna Reed, who played in "It's a Wonderful Life". I had the opportunity to live in this little community for a few months and fell in love with the town and surrounding area. It's my hope to pay a visit back there sometime in the near future. There's and awesome Mexican restaurant downtown, and besides excellent food, has the best chips and salsa AND lime margarita's I have ever had.

Leo Lake

I am not totally sure but I believe this is Leo Lake. I took this last year at this time, just off the Gunflint Trail. I have really been hoping to get out and take some agriculture shots but haven't had the time to do it. I will have to hurry as time is running out. I would say corn harvest is at least half done here. And for you farmers or ag workers, I haven't heard what the average yield here, has been, but have heard that moisture content of corn is about 10 to 12 higher than optimum.

The Dress

I have received several e-mails and comments about the dress I am wearing on my profile picture. I actually bought it from a vendor at the Steele County Fair. It has a super simple design but I did add something of my own to add some interest. Once the weather gets to the point where I am indoors more, I am going to sew a few and have them for sale on the clothing blog. I hope to have that site up soon.

My grandaughter and I took a walk down the road this morning to the pond to see the geese.
Goose hunting started today, we didn't bring a layout blind, shotgun, bird dog, or camo, but we got some good shots anyway.

Homeless In Minnesota...

Or just passing through? I have noticed transients who move out ahead of the cold weather this time of year, and again in the spring following the return of warmer temperatures. Following my curiousity I decided to talk to a few of them and ask for pictures. They are just folks, struggling at this point to get from here to there, with not a lot to go on. The young couple didn't have too much to say about their situation, but didn't express any discontent. The man traveling solo expressed some frustration at not being able to obtain employment because he lacked an ID. He said he had a birth certificate, but could't be issued an ID because he didn't have an address. He couldn't get an address because he didn't have a job.

I visited with this couple outside a convenience store. They were hitchiking back 'home' to a warmer climate with their cat, Miss Larry. They were a personable couple, and seemed in good spirits.

I wish them all a safe passage and better times ahead.
